Underground Moments
A black and white photographic essay capturing everyday commuter moments inside Sydney’s Town Hall underground train station. The series observes travellers waiting, watching, and moving through the platform as trains arrive and depart.
The Underground Moments series was photographed from across the platform inside Town Hall Station in Sydney. Sitting quietly with the camera, I watched commuters move through their daily routines—waiting for trains, stepping forward as a train approached, or simply sitting on the platform in the brief pause between services. The underground station becomes a stage for small everyday moments that often go unnoticed during the rush of the commute.
Working in black and white allowed the scene to simplify into shapes, tones, and movement. Fluorescent lights reflect off tiled walls and metal surfaces while the darker areas of the station frame the commuters waiting along the platform edge. With slower shutter speeds, passing trains introduce motion blur that contrasts with the stillness of people waiting.
This photographic essay presents four moments observed from the same vantage point—four glimpses of the rhythm of the underground railway where movement and stillness exist side by side beneath the city.
Underground Moments
The first image captures the anticipation of commuters as a train begins to enter the platform. Figures sit quietly on the platform seating while the train moves through the frame, creating a soft blur of motion against the still silhouettes of passengers waiting for their journey to begin.
Underground Moments 2
In the second moment the focus shifts more toward the movement of the arriving train while commuters sit quietly on benches waiting for the next train. The underground lighting produces strong contrasts that emphasise the graphic quality of the black and white scene.
Underground Moments 3
The third image shows a busier platform where commuters gather in greater numbers. The repetition of figures along the platform creates a rhythm within the composition while a passing train introduces subtle motion blur across the scene.
Underground Moments 4
The final photograph in the series captures a quieter pause between trains. Only a handful of commuters remain on the platform, spaced along the edge as they wait for the next arrival. The architecture of the underground station becomes more visible, framing the human figures within the scene.
Technical Details
Camera: Canon G5X Mark II
ISO: Approximately ISO 320
Aperture Range: f/2.5 – f/5
Shutter Speeds: 1/10 sec to 1/20 sec to introduce motion blur in trains while keeping still figures sharp.
Technique: Slower shutter speeds used to capture the movement of trains and commuters while maintaining sharpness in stationary subjects.
Post Processing
Images processed in Adobe Lightroom and converted to black and white. Editing was kept minimal and included cropping, straightening, and balancing highlights and shadows to preserve detail in the darker underground environment.
