The Blue Mountains west of Sydney are one of Australia’s most atmospheric landscapes, and fog transforms the region into something almost otherworldly. When low cloud drifts through the valleys around Katoomba and Blackheath, cliffs, waterfalls and forests appear and disappear in layers of mist. For photographers, these conditions create depth, mystery and dramatic light that can turn a familiar landscape into a powerful fine art image.
In foggy conditions, look for elevated viewpoints such as Govetts Leap or Queen Victoria Lookout where the mist moves through the valleys below. Waterfalls such as Empress Falls and Leura Cascades become especially dramatic after rain, with spray and moisture hanging in the air and softening the surrounding forest. These locations are particularly photogenic when light begins to break through the cloud, creating subtle beams and shifting contrasts.
